Thinning Hair patterns according to Chinese medicine

Michelle McNeill offers some advice for hair loss sufferers

Thinning hair lately?
Traditional Chinese medicine approaches concerns about hair thinning by focusing on understanding how the body’s systems relate to each other. Let’s look into TCM’s view on hair growth/loss and some holistic approaches to achieving those healthy locks!

Hair is an extension of “Blood”. Blood in TCM includes not only blood, but also fluids, nutrients, lubrication, and warmth. A diagnosis of “Blood deficiency”, poor blood flow, or an impedance to hair follicles can cause hair thinning.
Weak hair growth can stem from ageing, stress, or excessive indulgence. These impact TCM’s Blood aspect, which feeds into the hair. Damp can also block the flow of Blood to the hair follicles.

Symptoms of dampness can include fatigue, heavy limbs, small appetite, frequent phlegm, and sticky stools.

Emotional imbalances and a sedentary lifestyle can also hinder the efficient flow of Qi and Blood, affecting hair growth.
Here’s how TCM (and you) can help!

Acupuncture! It stimulates blood flow to the scalp while strengthening the body’s functions of Blood production and circulation
Herbal medicine: there are herbs commonly used for hair growth that we may add to your personalised formula
Dietary changes: depending on your constitution, we can suggest certain foods to help balance your body - in general, adding foods like goji berries, black sesame seeds, and bone broth into your daily diet will enhance Blood production
Scalp massage! Just the best feeling ever. This improves blood circulation and stimulates the hair follicles. Rub circular motions around your head daily using the pads of your fingers
Stress reduction: a significant contributor to hair thinning.. find ways to reduce the way you respond to stress in your daily life - or ask a practitioner if they can focus on this in treatments

Honing in on the internal imbalances within your specific body allows us to approach hair thinning holistically. Treatments may show long-term improvements by addressing the root causes.
