Body - Reiki

Calming the body and mind

Reiki is a gentle, yet effective energy therapy that can assist one to calm the body and mind, by fostering a deep sense of relaxation and interpersonal connection. Reiki involves the therapist gently laying hands on the participant who is fully clothed, to promote a balance of the subtle energies in and around the body, giving one a sense of overall wellbeing. Reiki can be beneficial to foster some downtime, which may be helpful to find equilibrium in the more demanding times of life,

Just for today, do not be angry
Just for today, do not worry
Just for today, be grateful
Just for today, work honestly
Just for today, be kind to every living thing
- Dr. Mikao Usui

Some preliminary studies on the effects of Reiki indicate that it may benefit mood, with recipients who received Reiki in a research study in London indicating that receiving Reiki improved anxiety, depression and stress symptoms, via self reports based on improved sleep, illness symptoms and mood, compared to the control group that did not receive Reiki, with improvements being maintained for five weeks after the trial (Bowden, Goddard and Gruzelier, (2011). According to a pilot study in the US, Reiki has been shown to have some impact on the autonomic nervous system (Mackay, Hansen and McFarlane, 2004). Whilst the preliminary research is promising, it is recommended that further studies be undertaken to determine the effectiveness of Reiki.
